Chapter 1 Comeback

"Intentional homicide, burning corpse, death penalty!"

In a taxi, an elegant young woman stared at the newspaper in her hand and read through the lines, her body trembling involuntarily.

No wonder dad's last phone call was so strange. No wonder she couldn't reach him recently.

But... homicide? How was it possible!

Her dad was a well-known entrepreneur in the Capital City. As the founder of Bliss Group, he enjoyed high prestige!

Jenny Lane folded the newspaper and took a few deep breath.

In any case, she didn't believe her father would do such a thing as murder!

The taxi pulled off at Lane's villa.

Grabbing her trunk, she hurried off the car, anxious to inquire if this was just a mistake!

She was stopped at the gate.

"Miss! This is a private residence. You cannot break in!" While warning her, a servant pushed her out.

Her eyebrows furrowed, "I'm Jenny."

"... Jenny? Don't know! Go, go now!"

"I'm the lady of the Lane Family, and this is my home!" Jenny suppressed her anger and explained again.

"Yo." A cold female voice came from the living room, "Jenny, now you come back. I thought you died outside!"

Jenny glanced at a woman who raised her head behind the sofa.

It was her stepmother, Hedy Smith.

Now she was sitting cozily on the sofa with a facial mask. A few fashion magazines lay on her knees, and a few plates of fruit spread on a tea table in front of her.

The woman had never talked to her like this before!

"What do you mean?" Jenny narrowed her eyes.

"Don't give me that." Hedy picked up a piece of fruit with a toothpick, "I thought you would come back and collect your father's dead body."

Jenny's heart sank to the bottom!

She froze there like a statue.

After quite a while, she finally came to her senses. Clenching her fists, she pushed the servant out of the way, "Hedy, my dad has never mistreated you! What do you mean by that?"

From the commanding position, she looked at Hedy with red eyes.

All these years, Hedy hated her loftiness the most. The girl was overbearing all the time!

She changed countenance for a moment and seemingly remembered something before treading on air again, "Homicide and burning the body. Your father is a murderer. It's good that he is caught! Besides, his doing has nothing to do with me!"

Heh!

Jenny sneered, "Even a dog knows to protect its owner. Some people are worse than beasts. Hedy, what on earth is going on with my dad?"

Hedy blushed and then threw over a file after quite a while.

Jenny skimmed it through.

Three months ago, someone anonymously reported his father for murder. The victim was a shareholder of the Bliss Group, and irrefutable evidence was attached in that anonymous letter.

She tottered slightly.

Noticing her response, Hedy slowly took the mask off her face, "Jenny, you come back at the right time. I have something to tell you. I know you look down on me for my origins, but I am the lawful wife of your father. So, Tracy and I deserve our share of the heritage. You cannot covet it and act against your conscience!"

With her dad just sentenced and still alive, she started to fight for the heritage!

Jenny arched her eyebrow, "Is that so? According to Item 3, Article 16 of the Inheritance Law, citizens can make wills to dispose of their personal property. Since my dad is still alive, he can make a will and leave you no money. So, stop your ugly face before you arouse Divine Wrath!"

Frustrated by her statement, Hedy soon smiled disapprovingly, "Jenny, don't be naïve and stop being a nerd. Your father has been in custody for a couple of months. Do you think he carries the bank card with him?"

Jenny sneered.

The smile sent a shiver down Hedy's spine.

The next second, Jenny leaned over and looked closely at the well-preserved woman on the sofa, "Mrs. Smith, another heads-up to supplement your poor legal knowledge. According to provisions of the Marriage Law, one party disposes of joint property without the other party's consent is an invalid civil act."

"Besides, my dad is still alive. Before the enforcement of the law, he still enjoys full civil rights. He can prosecute and divorce you. Firstly, you have no share of his pre-marital property; secondly, during the divorce, if one party hides, transfers, sells off, destroys the joint property, or forges debts, the property may not be divided."

Out of fear or without grounds to resort, Hedy kept changing countenance.

Just then, there came a fit of claps from behind, "Well said, Jenny, you are quite a lawyer and have the gift of the gab."

Chapter 2 You Are Not Worthy

As expected, it was Tracy Lane.

She was Hedy's daughter and her stepsister, after Hedy married her father.

Jenny looked at her face and found it different from their last encounter. Tracy was a video blogger, aka net celebrity. Her frequency of face-lifting was higher than buying new clothes.

In a short strapless dress, she kept her chin high with an air of contempt.

"Hmm, it's a difference between capability and appearance oriented. However, my capability is real, and your face probably not!"

Tracy's face immediately flushed with anger!

She hated others to disparage her plastic face.

Pointing at Jenny, she put down her feigned grace, "Jenny, you think you are still a darling daughter? Your father committed murder and will be executed! You are nothing now!"

Tracy showed a tinge of complacency in her eyes, "One more thing I need to tell you..."

She stretched out her hand and waved it in front of Jenny, "See? Seany gave this to me as a present. Now he is my boyfriend. From now on, you should stop pestering him!"

Jenny found it ridiculous.

Sean Roger was her fiancé.

They didn't really have a solid relationship. If her mother didn't die for the rescue of Mrs. Roger, she wouldn't have connected with such a rich family as the Rogers.

She might not care about such a thing but would never allow Tracy to take it away.

Jenny's brains worked fast. At such a moment, she needed to get along with the Roger Family before she got the power to figure out her father's case. So...

At that critical point, she would not compromise!

As for Tracy...

If she didn't stop being shameless, she wouldn't mind teaching her a lesson...

She glanced at the ring on Tracy's finger and tittered, "So what?"

So what?

Her fiancé gave another woman a ring, and she was indifferent. Was she confused in anger?

Tracy drew closer, "Sis, guess what, without status, a phoenix down to the plain is worse than a chicken..."

Her words were harsh.

As a lawyer with international qualifications, Jenny was never afraid of bickering.

She pouted, "You mean I'm inferior to you. I got it, no need to repeat it."

Only after a few seconds did Tracy realize it was abuse.

Her face contorted with resentment, "Jenny, you had everything in the past. People would praise you whenever you gave me some used items. You wouldn't let go of Sean and flaunt your wedding. I've hated you to the core!"

Back then, when Tracy just came to the Lane Family, she was always mocked as a third wheel. It was Jenny who dealt with those people and warned them against bullying her little sister.

Today, Jenny saw the other side of humanity.

In the past, her relationship with Tracy was not bad. They were even confident. In her mind, she even believed her family was a harmonious one rare in the upper-class.

Later, she went abroad but still often sent her sister fine items that she discovered. As for the wedding, since she was not familiar with her fiancé, she discussed many issues with Tracy.

To her surprise, her closet family member betrayed her!

As if hearing the crack of her heartbreaking, Jenny covered her chest.

Following her hand, Tracy spotted a beautiful ruby brooch and knew Sean gave it to her as a token of love.

In a fit of passion, she tore it off and tried it before her chest, "Sean gave this to you? You are not worthy..."

Not worthy?

But Tracy was the unworthy one!

She deemed her kindness as alms and flaunted. Good, great.

From now on, she would rather dump her items into trash can than give them to Tracy!

Jenny snatched back her brooch, held it in her hand, squinted at her sister closely, and spoke slowly, "I'm engaged to Sean and will fulfill it. Even though I'm no longer the princess of Bliss Group, I will be the hostess of Roger Group."

She sneered with a hint of contempt, "Do you think you can take my man away? Tracy, I tell you what, despite your hatred and effort, you are nothing but a shameful mistress if I don't step down!"

Following her words, Jenny left without going back to her room. With her assistant, Shirley Dowson, she hailed a taxi and headed to the Roger Mansion.

As the capital of the country, Capital City gathered many wealthy merchants. Every inch of the downtown was extremely expensive, and countless high-rises were erected there.

The Bliss Mansion was also here. The location alone indicated power.

When passing by the Bliss Mansion, Jenny took a few glances and sighed inwardly.

When she was little, she often came here with her dad on duty.

Back then, this place didn't boast many high-rise buildings, and the Bliss Mansion used to be the tallest one. It enjoyed its days of glory.

After a dozen years, the mansion still stood there with new decorations, but her dad was no longer there. She wondered how the company was doing now.

Seemingly for fear of her grief, Shirley hastened to change the subject. Pointing at a towering skyscraper ahead, she said, "Look, that is the headquarters of Roger Group."

As a leading consortium, the Roger Group had its building uniquely designed. An air bridge on top connected the twin towers, which looked as imposing as the Arc de Triomphe.

The upper floors of the building were fitted with one-way reflective glass. Under the light, the outer surface reflected diamond luster and brilliance.

Even the Bliss Group not far away was dwarfed by the current tallest building in Capital City.

Chapter 3 Fiancé's Son

Housed on the top floor of Roger Group, the CEO's Office featured two desks, large and small.

Sitting in front of the large desk, Sean Roger kept her head low, sketching on the documents. His face was cold, arrogant, and uninhibited.

As for the small desk at the back...

It couldn't really be called a desk. Although its shape and structure were no different from those of the large one, it was too small and like a toy.

There sat a child wearing a suit and bow tie.

With fine features, the child already showed the potential to be a heartthrob even though he was just five, six years old.

Under his little slanted eyebrows, his eyes looked dark and shiny. Full of spirits, he looked like a little model in fashion magazines.

He had Sean's eyes and wore a little suit just like the man. In a sense, he was a mini version of Sean.

There was a stack of photos and documents in front of him. While watching one by one, he read it out, "Jenny Lane, Ph.D. from Ivy College in Country A, ILFC certification and international lawyer qualification obtained. Majoring in psychology, she is proficient in eight foreign languages and studied watercolor from European artists..."

This woman's resume was impeccable. In every subject, she was a pro.

The little one exclaimed, "Wow, daddy, this woman looks tough!"

Following a glance at his son, Sean stood up, walked to the window, and overlooked the city. His lips moved, but the voice didn't come out.

The fiancée...

Although they had been engaged for years, they were not familiar and even hadn't met. Neither did he tell her that he had a son already five years old.

He nearly forgot the engagement until Mason Lane suddenly came to his door a couple of months ago. The man brought up the engagement and suggested marriage, given the proper age of his daughter.

Impressed by her resume, he didn't refuse.

Then, Mason was somehow arrested for murdering a subordinate.

It seemed the old man planned for everything.

Across his life, Sean hated to become part of another's scheme.

He would like to see what tricks the Lanes were playing.

Just then, his cell phone rang on the desk.

As Sean glanced at the screen, his slanted brows knitted. Turning on silent mode, he then put the phone aside.

As expected, he received a text message from his aunt a few seconds later, "Sean, come home for dinner tonight. Your uncle and I miss you very much."

Sean gave no reply while the little one had been used to such a thing. Both of them didn't mention a word about it.

Following a glance at the file in his hand, the kid stated in a milky voice, "Daddy, I believe this aunt can outshine Aunt Linda!"

The moment when his aunt's call and message came in, he knew he would meet Linda Morgan tonight at his aunt's house.

As the niece of his aunt, Linda tried every trick to approach him. But in his mind, it was just girls' petty tricks.

As for his uncle and aunt, they used to try manipulating him like a puppet and take over the company left by his grandparents and parents. Unexpectedly, he fought back and wrecked their plan.

Now they wanted to plant a woman around him and sweep him off his feet.

They spared no effort to make a match and would not give up even though he already got a son.

Sean hated to see people playing tricks on him like clowns.

It happened that the Lane Family could serve as his shield.

He could watch the dogs fight.

Although his son was only five years old, the little one cared about the adult's business and insisted on finding a sweet stepmother.

What was more, the kid was so picky that he not only thought poor of Linda but even favored none of those celebrities and models on TV.

Like an adult, the kid sighed, "Alas, daddy, why is it so hard to find a wife for you?"

...

Sean's parents passed away many years ago, so he didn't have to face moral abduction and pressure from marriage like the others did.

But why the initiator of pressure became his son now?

While flipping through the photos, the kid muttered in confusion, "Weird, why isn't a single picture clear enough?"

The photos attached to the back of the files were either a crowd shot, or in them she was wearing sunglasses, or blurred side face was captured. After such a long time, he still couldn't figure out how the woman looked like. He only noticed her seemingly tall and slender figure.

Because she was abroad, back then!

And Sean couldn't ask his men to follow her abroad and take pictures just for the sake of seeing her face!

Sean raised his wrist to check his watch before the corners of his mouth curved up, "Almost time, you'll soon meet her in person and don't need to watch the photos."

The little one got a little excited again, "Well then, daddy, leave the interview to me. I'll see if she can be my mommy alone!"

Sean hesitated, "You?"

The kid lifted his chin, deliberately smoothed his hair, and made his coolest posture, "Sure, you'll see!"
